Kate Howey, Olympian, to open the Lake Run

23rd August 2019

Kate Howey, winner of two Olympic medals in judo will open this year’s Andover Lake Run which takes place on Sunday 22 September 2019. Kate said ‘I’m very honoured to be part of this day as there are more and more families in need at this time. I’m even more honoured because I am an Andover girl, born and bred and it’s nice to give something back to the local community’. Kate won silver at the 2000 Olympics in Sydney and bronze at the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona. She was selected to carry the British flag at the opening ceremony of the 2004 Olympics in Athens.

The Lake Run is being sponsored by the Aster Foundation and the money raised at the event will be used to help those in crisis in Andover. Cameron Kinsella, Aster Foundation Director said “The Aster Foundation is grateful to be involved in this event supporting our local foodbank. I have personally volunteered in foodbanks and have seen first hand the vital work they do in helping people to feel whole again and look forward to working together with the foodbank, to enable local people in our communities to improve their own lives.”

In 2018 the Andover foodbank fed around 4000 people in addition to providing toiletries, cleaning materials and other necessary items to maintain the dignity of people who are going through difficult times. The foodbank provides additional support for individuals and families at Christmas, Easter and recently trialled a project to support families in the summer holidays which received considerable support and positive feedback.

This year’s race will be filmed by a drone and streamed live on Facebook. As well as the chip timed 5k, 10k, races and fun run, local companies can enter a team in the Andover Advertiser Cup for Andover’s Fittest Business Teams. The Lake Run starts and ends at Charlton Athletics Pavilion. It is multi terrain on established footpaths and goes past Charlton and Anton Lakes.
